In spy terminology honey trap has been used by Soviet, Cuban and Eastern European intelligence services defining a woman entrapping businessmen and officials from the West in sexual liasions to retrieve intelligence and to achieve subserviance. This most well known case the U.S. was in the 1980s when the U.S. Marine Corp Sergeant Clayton J. Lonetree was entrapped by a female Soviet officer with revealing photographs.

Consequently, the term is used in detective novels and espionage novels to describe a trap using some form of sexual enticement.
